First mentions of Ulcinj go back to V century B.C., it's one of the oldest architectural and historical monuments of the Adriatic region. Throughout its history Ulcinj has been a part of Greece, the Roman Empire, Byzanthine, Serbia, the Venecian Republic, the Osman Empire, and, finally, Montenegro.
The territory of the modern Old Town contains the tower of Kula Balšića, an old Venecian castle (former residence of the Balsic royal family), archeological and ethnographic museum, numerous 2 and 3-story buildings with cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops, as well as apartments for rent.
The walls surrounding the Old Town offer magnificent views of the city, the sea and the surrounding area. The Old Town is free to enter.
