The Vlaska crkva (the Church of Vlaska) is the oldest church in Cetinje, built in 1450 on top of a destroyed ancient necropolis. It's dedicated to the Nativity of Mary.
There are various theories about how the church got its name. Some researchers claim that it got its name from the word "vlah", meaning "shepherd", and that shepherd themselves founded the church. Others claim that it was built by townpeople from the village Stari Vlah (on the territory of modern Serbia) and was named accordingly.
Throughout the ages the church was rebuilt several times, the latest in 1864 when it got its modern appearance. A fence around the church was installed in 1897. Curious fact: it was built using over 1500 guns taken from the Turkish after the victory in the Battle of Grahovac (1858) and later battles.
In 1860 the church hosted the wedding of knyaz of Montenegro Nikola I Njegos and his wife Milena Vukotic.
Nowadays the Vlaska crkva is a practicing Orthodox church belonging to the Cetinje Monastery. It's open to everyone.
